In this Learning some basics (Childcare) taster course you will complete the following.

Welcome to this short introduction to your Childcare course. This will help to prepare you for when you start learning at Gower College Swansea!
The childcare course is designed for those of you who would like to develop your knowledge of the childcare sector. This introduction will provide you with an insight in to some of the ways you will be learning (and having fun!) whilst studying with us.

Watch the YouTube clip. It will show you how to prepare a baby’s bottle. Take notes if you can.
Summary
- Fill a kettle with at least 1 litre of fresh tap water. Don’t use water that’s been boiled before.
- Boil the water and leave to cool for no more than 30 minutes
- Clean and disinfect the surface you will be using
- Wash your hands
- If you’re using a cold water steriliser, shake to excess solution from the bottle and teat or rinse with cooled water.
- Following the manufacturers' instruction on the formula and pour the required amount of water needed into the bottle. Always put the water in first while it is still hot and before adding the powder.
- Fill the scoop with baby powder as per the manufacturers' instructions
- Hold the edge of the teat and put it on the bottle and screw the retaining ring onto the bottle.
- Cover the teat with the cap and shake the bottle until the powder is dissolved
- Cool the formula by holding the bottle under cold running water
- Test the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist, it should be body temperature

Summary
- Make sure you have everything you need to hand
- Lay the towel or mat down. If you are using a changing table, never leave the baby alone or take your eyes off them
- Wash your hands
- Undress the baby’s bottom half
- Undo the dirty nappy
- Clean the nappy areas
- Apply nappy cream if needed
- Make sure that the part of the nappy that is between the legs is spread out to avoid chaffing.
- If it’s a comfortable fit, you should be able to fit one finger in the nappy
- Dress the baby

The manager of your setting has asked you to make a leaflet/ poster, outlining the steps that you need to follow to safely and accurately make a baby’s bottle.
Your leaflet/ poster could also be given to new mums at antenatal clinic.
Ensure that your creation is clear and informative. You can also use pictures to enhance the appearance of your work.
