Welcome to this short introductory course on Health, Social Care and Childcare.
This will help to prepare you for when you start your Health, Social Care and Child Care course at Gower College and covers some of the first things you will look at.

Here’s a quick summary of the things covered in the film:
There are many factors that affect our health – some are communicable diseases which means an illness caused by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria that can be transferred from an individual to another. Others are non-communicable diseases which means they are lifestyle choices and not transmitted from one person to another they are typically some allergies and nutrient deficiencies’.
Task:
- Identify three communicable diseases mentioned in the film
- Identify three non-communicable diseases and list some of the effects on the body of these lifestyle choices.

Public Health - is an NHS body whose purpose is to protect and improve health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. They improve the quality and effectiveness of healthcare services and protect people from infectious and environmental hazards. The documentary above identified public health initiatives:
Research the following 3 initiatives and identify their purpose and aim. We’ve provided some YouTube videos to get you going, but there’s lots more information out there for you to research.
Change 4 Life
Childhood Obesity has become such a problem that governments have now stepped in to give advice. This is the video made by the NHS in England to support their Change 4 Life initiative.

On the 6th April 2018, the UK government introduced a new tax on sugary drinks in an attempt to reduce the level of obesity in the UK. How will you be affected and will it even work?

Vaccination
Over half a million children in the UK were not immunised against measles between 2010 and 2017 - and now the number of people catching it is rocketing.

Comparing Models of Health
Although the clip you have looked at applies to Australia the models of health also apply to health care in the UK. The video gives a brief overview of the biomedical model and the social model of health – research and give a brief overview of the holistic model of health and list the 5 factors that are considered important for good health.
