YouTube video - Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
The recent health crisis that we have all faced has been a big challenge and has impacted both the physical and mental health of individuals all over the world.
- For some individuals their basic needs such as food and safety were not met and for others they were not able to see their loved ones or to go to work and achieve their goals.
- This is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in action! Understanding the human mind and behaviour is an important part of Health and Social Care. Feeling safe and having a positive self-concept will help you to deal with the challenges you may face in your lives. It is also important to know where to access support for your needs and how to provide support to others.
-
Here’s some more great materials from the Blended Learning Consortium to get you prepared for when you join us and have a go at the Activity on Maslow to test your knowledge! During this interaction you will look at the five stages of human need that motivates our behavior:
- First are the physiological needs: to breathe, eat, drink and sleep;
- Then come safety and our work towards achieving it;
- Next come love and belonging;
- Esteem, self confidence and respect come next;
- Lastly, comes self actualisation, you can feel relaxed and be creative.

Channel 4s ‘A Very British Ramadan’
One of the topics you will study in Health and Social Care examines the importance of treating people equally and recognising the differences in people and the rights that they have.
You will develop an understanding of the beliefs, cultures, backgrounds and abilities of many different people within the Health and Social Care sector.
Religious celebrations take place all over the world. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims by a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and coming together as a community.
Watch this short programme, ‘A Very British Ramadan’ to find out more about this very special time for Muslims.
Now you have learned about what happens during Ramadan for the Muslim community in the UK, answer the following questions:
- If you worked in a care home, what would you need to consider to help Muslim residents observe Ramadan?
- What adjustments would need to be made during a school day for Muslim students?
- Why is it important to raise money for charities during Ramadan?
- What have you learned from watching this clip that you were not aware of before?
- Why do you think it is so important to learn about different cultures and religions when studying health and social care?
-
