Summary
Freud originally trained as a Neurologist, before becoming a pioneer of psychoanalysis;
He proposed that people are motivated by the unconscious desire and repressed memories;
He treated people with depressions and PTSD by using talking therapies;
This forced the medical profession to acknowledge that psychological issues were real;
Some of Freud’s methods were flawed and caused real damage to some of his patients;
Much of the ideas he based his theories on were out-of-date even then, e.g. he thought trauma was something we inherited, way back to the ice-age;
While many of his ideas do not stand-up to modern scrutiny and he didn’t completely believe in the impact of therapy; he created a revolution in psychology that we benefit from today.
