Welcome to this short Introduction to Health and Social Care. This will help to prepare you for when you start your course with us at Gower College Swansea, as well as giving you an opportunity to brush up on some of your skills!

Summary
- Hazard Is the possibility of something causing harm
- Risk – is the probability of something causing harm
- There is always something else needed for a hazard to change into a risk

Summary
As you can see, there are loads of potential hazards in every part of life! Identifying them and know how to deal with them as they arise and stop them happening in the first place will help keep yourself and everyone else safe! -

Task 2 - Factors Affecting Growth and Development

How children develop will be a fundamental part of your Health and Social care course. The following YouTube video describes a Feral (wild) Russian child Oxana Malaya, abandoned by (alcoholic) parents and reared by dogs.
Summary
- Her actions mimic the actions of her carers, I.e. dogs
- Stories and example of wild / feral children have made us think and ask: “What makes us human?”
- Are we a product of our genes, or are we a product of our experience? Nature Vs Nurture
- Feral children help us look at this as they are and represent the ‘natural experiment we are not allowed to carry out’
- These children make us question what are the fundamental difference between humans and animals
- Speech and language and the awareness of ones self are key things in what makes us different to animals
- The rehabilitation of these child can be very difficult – neglect has a significant impact on the development of the brain which may always affect their development and behaviours.
