    • Welcome to this course: An Introduction to Childcare.  This will give you a gentle introduction in to the profession and the Childcare course you will be starting with us!  We hope you enjoy it and look forward to meeting you very soon!

      • Speak slowly, clearly and leave gaps
      • Don’t ask too many questions!  Make a comment instead of a question, tell them something about what they’re doing.
      • Song, rhymes and Stories!  The rhythms and rhymes help to establish building blocks for reading.
      • Make sure when you’re talking to a child you give them your full attention, you address the child by name and where possible they are looking at you when you are talking to them.
      • Teach action words!  It’s really important to teach children action words (verbs) and not just the names of things (nouns).  That’s how children can start to construct sentences and put words together.
      • It’s important for children to hear language modelled by the adults who are caring for them.  This support will help them expand and extend their language.
      • Using non-verbal praise will encourage and help the child with their development.  This could be smiling, clapping or giving the child a thumbs up!  If you’re giving verbal praise, make sure you are specific about what it is that’s made you happy.
